If you’ve watched the movie John Wick, there’s a group known as “the high table”, who are the leaders of the criminal underworld. Much like the movie, there is a real “high table” in every state and every country.
The High Table is where the underworld meets the upperworld. It is gateway between both worlds, and its very existence is crucial for continued survival of the civilized world.
I can’t say I was always apart of it. Rather, I was always an outside observer, playing on the outskirts of the forbidden city, but never fully entering it. As I write this, it would appear I was the one being observed this whole time.
It happens by accident, so long as you are in the right industry or dabbling in the right “wrong” circles. Anything that doesn’t belong in traditionally, established lines of businesses, would inevitability fall under the jurisdiction of the underworld. Illicit trading, illegal dealings, shady agreements, things that are by its very nature, twisted and unnatural, are still natural and require modes of procurement, processing, logistics and handling, loads of administrative work that require souls to perform.
The underworld is a business, and like every business, there are departments, SOPs, book keeping, exchange of money and of course, operators to carry out and deliver upon such goods and services.
Unsurprisingly, they also require tech people. That’s where I come in.
New Industries Are Breeding Pools For Criminal Activity
Doesn’t matter if it’s crypto, AI, peptides or, my particular favorite, cannabis.
Cannabis has been around longer than the aforementioned, so in a way the criminals in this world are much more seasoned. Veterans of the war on drugs. They’ve had their fair share of run ins with the law which continues to this day. One day I woke up, and the majority of my co-workers now have records and charges, not all of the non-violent.
Privilege & Protection
Two things that come to mind immediately when I think of the benefits of working for them.
1. Privilege – the mark of status which enables special treatment, extra attention and access to otherwise restricted areas. Privilege cannot be bought. It has no price tag and is entirely dependent on organic, fate-based networking. You either are lucky enough to meet these people, and be in a position where you are able to form a relationship, or you are not.
2. Protection – the covenant between me and my new adopted blood family, where in exchange for my undying loyalty and services, I will be granted the protection afforded to all members of the party. This protection extends onto my blood, and closest friends and family. It is understood that, if the time comes or should I be required or personally volunteer, all my capabilities are also to be extended in service and protection of another member and his.
The underworld is a very misunderstood place. Think about it, it is generally the derelicts and banes of society. They are the forgotten dust devils of paradise. And to be part of them, is to be one of them.
Obviously, my public profile, social media posts and even this blog has the appearance of a white collar, straight edged tech worker. But beneath all that, is a savage, a beast with modern technology. The same can be said for most of my colleagues in the cannabis industry. We are polite monsters, but monsters nonetheless.
We work incredibly hard, given the circumstances, it is no wonder the cannabis industry is only continuing to grow, and as it does, so does the power of my group.
Watch Who You’re Talking Too
It is strange to me, that a random, traditionally raised Taiwanese kid could somehow be adopted into a group that is tied to The High Table.
It implies many things. That the world is much more accepting of broken, lost souls than I anticipated. And further more, that powerful, modern underworld organizations have long existed solely in part and for the impoverished man.
I can see why people murder for their “gang”. If you had no where to go, and no one else to turn to, and somebody took you in, you would be indebted to them for life.
While the surface world is seemingly suffering from a “economic recession”, I can say with certainty that the underworld is always hiring so long as you are the right fit.
I’ve been in the cannabis industry for many years, so it was only a matter of time before the right group caught wind of me and my prestigious resume.
By the time I was hired, in my new office, I didn’t even have time to think, I was locked in.
California, particularly Los Angeles, is a very strange place. Anyone could be anything, and it is painfully obvious to me upon reflecting on my own character and situation.
